Continuum of Engagement

2. What are your connections to the “School vs Learning image? What would you add or modify?

I'm going to take that question in a little bit different direction. But I've been pondering the School vs Learning image since I saw it last Friday. Actually, I have been mulling over the whole chapter - engage vs. empower.

My first thoughts are that there is a healthy balance between the two. I've been researching teachers blogs for a few years now, on Reggio Emilia and project based learning, and through that research I have found that most have a little bit of both.
They have the learning environment - with creativity, inquiry and engagement - but they also have a compliant environment. A compliant environment where the teacher is teaching and the student is listening.

To me, the image (image 1) above, does a great job demonstrating that continuum. When I look at that image, I see teachers sliding up and down the ladder all day. There is a time for each throughout the day. There is no one way to teach - each moment is different.

Some things I am pondering, as I am typing, are...
-How will students react to bouncing back and forth between learning styles? Too much?
-Will they be able to engage deeply in their topics of exploration due to time constraints?

Would love to hear some of your thoughts...

I attended a Yoga class today, where the instructor spoke of "Flow". It makes perfect sense in relation to your post. The sense of the student "letting go" and becoming empowered in their learning.

Regarding the various levels of learning styles--this is a challenge. I am questioned often by the student who asks for the "old" way of learning (notes, lecture, test) and she gets "lost" in the collaborative, student centered classroom.

Yet, she states repeatedly that she loves my class, and has signed up for my elective next fall. Sometimes, making someone uncomfortable leads to her uncovering what he/she truly loves. That is, learning.

Great job, keep it up!

Hi Rich!
YES! Yoga is the perfect place to experience "FLOW." How awesome that you are able to push your students into the unknown. I completely agree, being uncomfortable can often lead to what you truly love....amazing that we are learning throughout our life, huh? It's not just a school thing. :)
Take care,
Jackie
